Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. It’s used to treat skin infections, rosacea and mouth infections (including infected gums and dental abscesses). It’s used in the treatment of conditions such as bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease. It’s also used to treat infected insect bites, skin ulcers, bed sores and wounds, and to treat and prevent bacterial and parasitic infections.
Metronidazole tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water, after you’ve eaten some food.
It’s generally safe to use metronidazole while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
